Why resolutions don’t work.

While for me, this year doesn’t really feel any different from 2020, I am feeling hopeful for change. Today, I was speaking with a client, and we got onto the topic of resolutions. Typically when I think of resolutions, I think of the cliches.

“This year I am going to eat healthier! I will go to the gym! I will read more!” The list goes on..So I started thinking why is it that resolutions rarely work?

1) They aren’t specific enough.

Ever heard of a smart goal? (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound)

Many individuals love to make statements like I listed above, but if there are no measurables you aren’t helping yourself in the long run. How about a goal of working out twice a week? Or cooking dinner 10 times a month. You get the idea.

2) It isn’t sexy to you.

What I mean here is, many goals get framed in a negative light, because really it is something you are avoiding. “Don’t eat that bag of Kettle Chips in your cupboard”… not sexy. “Let me eat some berries and almonds as a snack to get my Vitamin C in for the day”… sexy. (Or sexier 😆)

3) You are in a rush.

Achieving goals take time, and sometimes there are setbacks and sidesteps and zigzags. This is challenging to admit, even to myself. Every goal I have had typically didn’t plan out how I intended. Sometimes those goals took longer than I ever thought they would take me to achieve, and some I still haven’t achieved. There are times where you may set a goal, and decide to completely change it down the road, and that’s ok.

Goal setting, is a part of life that we should always be thinking about, and we should always approach it with gusto, whether it’s January 1st, or July 1st. How will you ever get where you want to go, if you don’t think about it? If this sounds good to you, let’s chat about your goals for 2021 and beyond.

Cheers to a year ahead full of growth (and some celebratory Champagne).
